From PR to a Canadian passport: we'll prepare your citizenship application

Five requirements to apply

Permanent resident status
You have PR status and no unfulfilled conditions on it.
Days in Canada
At least 1,095 days in the last 5 years, including at least 730 as a permanent resident.
Taxes
Tax returns filed for at least 3 of the last 5 years, if you were required to file.
Language
English or French at CLB/NCLC level 4 — for applicants aged 18–54.
Citizenship test
Rights and responsibilities, history, geography and how Canada works — for ages 18–54.
Days before PR count too
Each day in Canada before you became a PR — on a work permit, as a student or as a visitor — counts as half a day. Up to a maximum of 365 days.
Example for illustration. Only days within the last 5 years before you apply count — we'll calculate your exact numbers from your trips and documents.
Mistakes that cost months
IRCC may return an incomplete or inaccurate application — and the wait starts over.
Travel dates don't match
IRCC checks your dates against border-crossing records. Discrepancies lead to questions and delays.
A tax year is missing
If the return for a required year wasn't filed, the tax requirement isn't met.
No proof of language
You need a document IRCC accepts as proof of CLB/NCLC level 4.
An incomplete package
Missing copies, photos or documents for children — the application gets returned.

Do I become a citizen if I marry a Canadian citizen?
No, citizenship isn't granted automatically. Spouses of Canadian citizens must meet the same requirements: physical presence, taxes, language and the test.
Do children and people over 55 need to take the test and prove language?
No. The test and language proof are required only for applicants aged 18 to 54. Children under 18 can be included in a parent's application.
How long does it take to get a decision?
Processing times change — IRCC publishes current ones on its website. A complete application the first time helps you avoid a return and extra months of waiting.
What happens if I apply before I have 1,095 days?
Your application may be returned or refused. That's why we count your days before you apply — from your trips and documents, not from memory.
Will I have to give up my other citizenship?
Canada allows dual citizenship. But your other country's rules may be different — it's worth checking separately.
